What is a Continuous Glucose Monitor?
A Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) is a sensor that is applied just under your skin that measures your glucose levels 24 hours a day. The transmitter within the CGM then sends results to the app on your cell phone. This data is then included in your SiPhox Health Report.
Why is it included in the Report?
CGM data allows users to track trends in blood glucose levels, which may clarify how diet, exercise, and other behaviors affect the body. A CGM eliminates the need to prick your finger to obtain glucose measurements and can alert you if your glucose is too high or low.
How does a Continuous Glucose Monitor work?
SiPhox Health utilizes the Abbott Libre 2 sensor. The Libre 2 uses a small sensor that is placed on the posterior, upper arm. The sensor is placed with an included applicator and holds through adhesion. The glucose reading is taken through a small needle at the center of the sensor. Within the needle is a small wire filament, equivalent to the width of an average piece of dental floss. This filament is applied at a depth that reaches your interstitial fluid, the space in and around your cells. The interaction that occurs between glucose and the coating of the filament is then converted into a glucose reading.
How can I better understand my results?
Time in Range represents an ideal upper and lower limit for your daily glucose readings. When you go outside of these ranges, it may represent an inability to properly regulate your glucose.
Minimizing the percentage of time you spend above and below these limits is an important goal to strive for.
Average glucose level gives you one metric to understand where your glucose management falls within the normal range. Having an average glucose level outside of the normal range may indicate an inability to properly regulate your glucose.
